Kennet & Avon Canal
Stretching 87 miles through stunning locations such as the idyllic county of Wiltshire and rolling landscapes of the Cotswolds, the Kennet & Avon Canal welcomes a multitude of daily guests ranging from boating enthusiasts and curious families to passionate explorers. Will you casually paddle across the gorgeous still waters of the canal, or walk the path of history and restoration with the unique audio trail? There’s only one way to find out…
Wiltshire Museum
Calling all history buffs! At Wiltshire Museum, everything you could ever possibly need to know about the fascinating history of Wiltshire is at your fingertips with this independent charity. Operated by the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society, the museum features events, exhibitions and learning experiences, including Roman treasures, an impressive £750, 000 gallery of reconstructions, and a vast library. And if you happen to have any little ones reading this over your shoulder… there’s plenty of fun for the family too, including trying on Bronze Age clothes (fancy) and building your very own Stonehenge.
Lacock Village
If you’re a film and television buff who has ever gushed over the gorgeous architecture of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films or wished you could roam the quaint village streets alongside Mr. Darcy in the 1995 BBC production of Pride and Prejudice, we’d like to direct your attention to a beautiful village within driving distance of our pub. Framed by historic stone houses, picturesque streets and scenic landscapes, the peaceful village and countryside of Lacock is no stranger to the camera. Appearing close to how it did 200 years ago – untouched by time – it’s only fitting that it’s the location of choice when desiring to capture classic elegance. And since stars such as Dame Maggie Smith, Benedict Cumberbatch and Damn Judi Dench have already experienced it… we think it’s your turn.
Bowood Gardens
Take a tour through Lord and Lady Lansdowne’s private walled gardens, a 90-minute walk of exploding colour, vibrancy, and fragrance. Dive into the sanctuary of the Woodland Gardens, with beds of bluebells, azaleas, magnolias, and rhododendrons – along with over 30 flowering hybrids believed to be extinct. And for the kids, The Den is waiting, with tractors to ride, building activities sourced from natural materials and a handy Bird Spotting Guide, to identify any tweeting from nearby trees. Plus, we doubt your backyard has an Adventure Playground with a real-life pirate ship…
